Innovative Aesthetic Barriers

Structures of Ironwood, LLC commenced operations in 1999. After two years of independent crash testing and product design modifications, the Ironwood composite wood / steel guide rail system was accepted for highway use (NCHRP 350, TL-3) by the Federal Highway Administration in June of 1999. Originally of European design, Ironwood's predecessor has been used extensively throughout Western Europe over the past twelve years. Ironwood is marketed across the United States and Canada through a network of distributors and sales offices. As the need for aesthetic barrier solutions has risen over the past twenty years, our company is the only highway safety product manufacturer to step forward with an independent design that meets this challenge. Project designers now have a context sensitive design solution to the problem of unsightly galvanized guardrail. It's called Ironwood.

Company

Structures of Ironwood, LLC manufactures and distributes the Ironwood guide rail product throughout the U.S. and Canada. Our upstate New York manufacturing facilities are well positioned to take full advantage of readily available softwood and hardwood resources, steel manufacturing and galvanizing facilities. In conjunction with our extensive background in highway safety barriers, Structures of Ironwood, LLC is committed to providing the safest and most aesthetically pleasing longitudinal barriers for the highway industry.

Product Description

Ironwood is a composite wood / steel longitudinal highway barrier consisting of an 8" milled round or 8" x 7" rectangular timber rail and 6 ¾" post block sections with supporting galvanized steel post, splice, channel, and hardware components. The rail sections have a .250" (6mm) steel channel embedded into and bolted to the non-traffic side of the timber rail. The 6 ¾" round or timber offset block covers the above grade portion of the driven 3I5.7 post and acts as a spacer between the steel post and the horizontal rail sections. From the traffic side of the installation an all-wood appearance is thus provided. Post spacing is 6'-6 ¾" (2m) with standard rail lengths of 13'-1 ½" (4m). Where roadway geometry requires the rail system to be curved, shorter 6'-6 ¾" (2m) rail sections are utilized to provide the proper radius. When necessary, all exposed galvanized surfaces can be powder coated to a color that best suits the context sensitive design. While Ironwood can be manufactured from a variety of commercially available wood species, our standard ACQ pressure treated inventory is composed of either red pine or lodgepole pine. Non-pressure treated species such as western red cedar are also available and can be stained according to the customer's requirements.
